3-Towers Trail

The 3-Towers Trail is a beautiful circular route that runs through the Wetzlar city area and the forested foothills of the Taunus, connecting the city's three historic towers. Covering approximately 14 km with an elevation difference of 264 meters, the trail leads to Karlsmunt, Brühlsbacher Warte, Garbenheimer Warte with the Bismarck Tower**, and the tower on Stoppelberg.

In the mid-12th century, Karlsmunt was founded by Emperor Barbarossa as an imperial castle. Together with Garbenheimer Warte and Brühlsbacher Warte, it was part of Wetzlar’s security system along the "Hohe Straße", a historic trade route between Frankfurt and Cologne.

The Bismarck Tower was originally built as a wooden observation tower but became structurally unsound over time. In 1929, the company Hollmann constructed the current tower, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.

Dunkelkaufhaus Wetzlar

The Dunkelkaufhaus is Wetzlar’s "non-sightseeing attraction."

In complete darkness, visitors are guided through pitch-black rooms by blind staff members. The experience is all about sharpening your senses once vision is no longer an option. How does peppermint or lavender actually smell in total darkness? Try it out for yourself!

Tours take place daily at 5:00 PM.

As special highlights, the Dunkelkaufhaus also offers unique events such as whiskey tastings, pizza nights, and more, all in complete darkness.

The Wetzlar Cathedral

You have to see it up close to truly appreciate what makes the Wetzlar Cathedral so unique. The combination of red sandstone on the tower and façade, plastered wall surfaces, and occasionally exposed green shale stone gives the church an uneven appearance even from a distance.

From Late Romanesque to Baroque, every era of German church architecture has left its fingerprint on the Wetzlar Cathedral—making it a fascinating challenge for those interested in architectural history!

Opening Hours:

  • April to September: 9:00 AM – 7:00 PM
  • October to March: 10:00 AM – 4:30 PM
